Both Trinidad and Tobago were originally settled by Amerindians of South American origin. Amerindians are mostly like native americans. Christopher Columbus encountered the island of Trinidad on 31 July 1498. Trinidad is also the birthplace of calypso music and the steel pan, which is widely claimed in Trinidad and Tobago to be the only acoustic musical instrument invented during the 20th century. The diverse cultural and religious background allows for many festivities and ceremonies throughout the year. Caribbean Carnival's principal components are calypso, steelpan and playing mas (masquerade).Today Trinidad's model for public celebration is the most widely imitated festival art form in the world. Many Trinidadian Carnival artists are able to work year round performing throughout North America, Europe, and the Caribbean.
